If the toilet won't flush and the water keeps rising, stop flushing and turn off the stop tap behind it. Then call Help Plumbing on (02) 9538 7878. We clear the blocked toilets Sydney families, tenants and offices call us about, often the same day, from our base in Earlwood. We find what's stuck and where, clear it properly and tell you how to stop a blocked toilet coming back. You approve a fixed price before we start.

Is it the toilet or the drain?

Before anything else, work out how far the problem goes. It changes who you need and how fast.

Only the toilet is slow or blocked

The blockage is usually in the pan or the first bend behind it. Wipes, too much paper or a dropped object are the common causes. This is a standard toilet unblocking job, and we clear most of them in one visit.

The shower, basin or yard drain is also playing up

If water rises in the shower when you flush, or the gully trap outside is wet, it's a toilet blocked drain further down the line, not just the pan. A blocked toilet drain pipe like this needs a jetter and a camera. Our blocked drains page covers that work in detail.

The toilet keeps blocking every few weeks

A blocked toilet that returns again and again points to a damaged pipe, tree roots or a pan with poor fall. Clearing it again won't help for long. We put a camera down to find the real cause.

What causes a blockage in toilet pipes

These are the blockages we see most often:

  • Wet wipes. Even the "flushable" kind don't break down like paper. They catch in the bend and build up.
  • Sanitary products and nappies. They swell with water and jam the pan outlet.
  • Kids' toys and dropped objects. Toothbrushes, phones and bottle caps sit in the trap and catch everything behind them.
  • Too much paper at once. Common with water-saving toilets that use less water per flush.
  • Tree roots in the sewer line. Common in older Sydney homes with clay pipes.

When a clogged toilet plumber finds the object, we show you. It helps everyone in the house know what not to flush.

Toilet blockage cleaner or a plumber?

Most people try a plunger first, and that's fair for a simple paper blockage. Unstopping toilet pans with a proper toilet plunger works more often than people expect.

We'd steer clear of a blocked toilet cleaner from the supermarket. A toilet unblocker liquid or toilet drain unblocker is mostly caustic chemical. It rarely shifts a solid object, it can damage older pipes and seals, and it leaves a hazard for whoever clears the toilet next. The same goes for any block toilet cleaner sold as a quick fix.

A toilet blockage cleaner won't move wipes, toys or roots. If one plunging session hasn't worked, it's time for a plumber to unblock toilet pipes properly.

Our toilet unblocking service, step by step

  1. We ask a few questions on the phone to work out if it's the pan or the drain.
  2. We inspect on site and find the cause. Where needed, a drain camera shows exactly where the blockage sits.
  3. You get a fixed price before any work starts.
  4. We clear it. Hand tools for the pan, a jetter for the drain line. No caustic chemicals.
  5. We test it with several flushes and check nearby fixtures drain properly.
  6. We clean up and explain what caused it.

That's our unblock toilet service from call to clean-up. Every toilet unblock is done by a licensed plumber. We hold NSW Plumbing Licence 489072C and carry $10 million public liability insurance.

If the pan or cistern is damaged once it's clear, we can fix that on the same visit. See our toilet repairs service.

Blocked toilet emergency: when to call after hours

Not every blocked toilet needs an after-hours call-out. If there's a second toilet in the house and nothing is overflowing, it can usually wait for a morning booking.

It is a blocked toilet emergency when:

  • Sewage is coming up through the shower, floor waste or gully trap.
  • The only toilet in the house is blocked and you can't wait.
  • Water is overflowing onto the floor and won't stop.

For those, call our 24/7 line and a blocked toilet emergency plumber will give you a time and the price before we start. Our standard hours are Monday to Friday 7am to 3pm and Saturday 7am to 12pm.

Blocked toilet plumber Sydney areas we cover

We're a toilet blockage plumber working from Earlwood, so the Inner West and St George are closest to our base.

Blocked toilet Inner West

Many Inner West homes still run on old clay sewer lines, and roots get into the joints. A blocked toilet Inner West homeowners call about is often a root problem, not just paper.

Blocked toilet Eastern Suburbs

A blocked toilet Eastern Suburbs apartments report can affect more than one unit when the shared stack blocks. We work with owners and strata managers to find which section is affected.

Our blocked toilet plumbers also cover Western Sydney, the Hills District, Ryde and the Blue Mountains. Our unblock toilet drain Sydney service also covers granny flats and second bathrooms on a shared line. See every service on our home page.

How to stop clogged toilets coming back

Most repeat blockages come down to what goes in the pan. A few habits make a big difference:

  • Flush only toilet paper. Put a small bin with a lid in the bathroom for wipes and sanitary products.
  • Use a second flush for heavy loads, especially with water-saving toilets.
  • Keep the lid down if small children are around. Toys are a common find.
  • Watch for slow flushing or gurgling. Those early signs mean a partial blockage is building.

If the pan still blocks with good habits, the problem is likely in the pipe itself, such as roots or a sagging section. A camera inspection shows which, and the footage tells you whether a clear-out will do or the pipe needs repair. Call (02) 9538 7878 to book one.

Blocked toilet FAQs

How fast can you get to a blocked toilet?

Same-day service is available across our area, and urgent jobs usually get a response within about an hour. Call (02) 9538 7878 and we'll give you a time straight away.

How much does it cost to clear a blocked toilet?

It depends on the cause and where it sits. We inspect first, then give you a fixed price. Nothing goes ahead until you approve it.

Can clogged toilets damage the house?

Yes, if they overflow. Water and sewage can get into flooring and the subfloor. Turn off the stop tap behind the toilet and stop flushing until it's cleared.

Will you need to remove the toilet?

Rarely. Most blockages clear from the pan or the drain access point. If the object is stuck in the pan itself, lifting the toilet may be the only way, and we'll tell you before we do it.

Who will turn up to clear my blocked toilet?

A licensed plumber, every time. Help Plumbing is rated 5.0 stars on Google from 105 reviews, and you'll see what caused the blockage before we leave.
